The pentavalent vaccine is the vaccine equivalent of buy 1, get 5 free. It prevents against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and haemophilus influenzae type B.
A vaccine which kills 5 birds with one stone obviously has numerous advantages including:
- Less complaints from the kids!
- Lower shipping/transportation costs
- Lower packaging costs
- Fewer staff needed to administer the vaccination
- Less equipment needed, ergo less wastage (happier environment)
As this vaccine is a lot more affordable, it has been succesfully introduced into some of the world’s poorest countries including Sudan. India aim to administer it to every child in the nation by 2014. If all countries were to follow India’s example, 7 million deaths could be prevented by 2020.
