New nasal flu vaccine by AstraZeneca approved by FDA Good news for those of us who hate needles – the FDA has very recently approved a new nasal flu vaccine called FluMist Quadrivalent.

This new vaccine differs from the typical ones circulating around the market not only in the delivery method, but also because it contains 4 strains of influenza instead of the usual 3. FluMist Quadrivalent gives immunity to two types of Influenza A and two of Influenza B.

Dr. Stan Block of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine emphasizes the importance of this, saying “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), since the 2001-2002 season, influenza B viruses from both lineages have co-circulated in the USA”.

The newly approved vaccine has been developed by AstraZeneca, and can be used by people between the ages of 2 and 49 years of age.
